I am all for multifaceted stuttering therapy to which most SLPs pay lip service claiming to do something they call an eclectic approach. The problem is that the current delivery system is inefficient, ineffective and amounts to token therapy, given the nature of stutttering. It has long been lamented that SLPs know something about stuttering but lack the tools. And those who possess the tools know nothing about stuttering. My view is that stuttering is too big for SLPs, alone. That's why I advocate bringing in experts -- according to the individual needs of the client -- from outside speech-language pathology in a coordinate multidisciplinary team approach to bring about the necessary desensitization, healing and strengthening. As well as SLPs, the treatment team would include experts in such areas as desensitization, assertiveness training, anti-procrastination techniques, interpersonal communnications, psychology and psychotherapy, acting and drama, and anxiety and stress management, sports psychology and human performance, and para-therapist coaches and trainers. This would be ongoing process -- no quickie fixes here. Now SLPs usually don't very much like my modest proposal but their long-term results or lack thereof, speak for themselves, so to speak. — edfeuer@mts.net
