Pamela: Thank you so much for your supportive comments about my article. Change in speech takes a lot of time and effort, at least from what I have seen with the clients I serve. Many parents are confused and frustrated that their child is not making quick improvements through therapy. This leads to discouragement not only for the parent but for the child as well. It's hard to say what the one piece of advice I would give to parents but essentially it is be patient and supportive of your child's EFFORTS to make change, not so much whether he does or doesn't reduce his stuttering. The effort is what's important and making sure that the child feels supported and not judged only for how they talk is the main thing parents will want to bear in mind.
