I don’t really have a rule of thumb either, though as I think back on former clients, it seems that those I was able to motivate would talk to me about non-therapy related matters (usually the first time I tried). That is, if a client was willing to take a walk and talk about, say, the Dolphins game, he usually came around to cooperating eventually (this particular topic, of course, worked better back when the Dolphins were good). The ones who kept snarling during my initial attempts at small talk...well, let’s just say none of them ever made it onto a ‘before’ video.
