Alan: Thanks for your comments and insights as a person who stutters about the role of techniques in therapy. Indeed, working on techniques alone will not work and they must be integrated into realistic speaking situations at some point. As clinicians, we must be sure that a client can demonstrate and discuss how the technique is done and why it works before I can expect a client to use it with confidence in the real world. Once that training is accomplished, it is up to the client to try out the strategies in various situations. Good for you for recognizing that is necessary and that you keep trying new situations and pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone of easy talking situations. I also hear my clients say that the technique use, when effective, can increase confidence levels but it is also important that he/she set up speaking situations that challenge the skill use in more difficult speaking situations like you have learned to do. Best of luck to you as you continue your journey of recovery from stuttering.
