Hello, my name is Tyra and I am a graduate student in speech-language pathology. I just received my first client and he happens to have a fluency disorder. I have not even had my first meeting with this client, but I know he is in his 30’s. I read your article and principle #5 really stuck out. This person is already an adult, and has had previous treatment, so I am sure he is aware that therapy is not instantaneous. I know I should reiterate this fact, but I do not want to discourage him, especially when I first meet him! I need to let him know that his fluency will not be changed in one or two treatment sessions. However, I do not want to bombard him and tell him that improvement takes time and he could be attending intervention for a while. How would you suggest I speak with him, with out overwhelming him? Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts! I look forward to hearing from you.
