Hi Dr. Healey, Thank you so much for sharing and explaining some of your principles of stuttering therapy and for including the UNL website! I love being armed with information - which is probably why principle #7 rings so true. Speech-language pathology will be a second career for me - I have learned so much in the last year and a half since starting graduate school. Your paper and principles will be valuable resources for me as I evolve as a clinician. But – this isn’t about me! I do have a couple questions for you, if you don’t mind entertaining them for a moment. First – it is so wonderful that you have been able to practice and grow in this field and to have over 30 years of experience! One of the reasons that I am pursuing speech-language pathology is because it is so rewarding to help people - something I don’t expect or hope to tire of. However, over the years, what have you done to keep the fire alive and guard against burnout or apathy? Perhaps this is an unwarranted question given the immeasurable rewards of the profession and the fact that ongoing learning (principle 7) likely stokes the fire. :) Second – have you encountered clients and/or their parents who have “researched” and convinced themselves that a certain therapy approach or even therapy gimmick (from an illegitimate source) should be used in their treatment plan – without an evidence-base? And if so, how do you or would you respond to their insistence? I think that is all for now – but I may have more questions and I sincerely appreciate this forum and opportunity to engage in a dialogue. Thanks so much for your time and expertise!
