Using novel conditions to create immediate fluency are only used to create an understanding of what is changing in the speech production process from ordinary speech. And, I don't use these very often because most clients don't need to go that level of novel speaking. If they are used, we do choral speaking or use a DAF unit only long enough to show the client how the air flows more evenly, the voice is turned on more consistently, the movements of the articulators are slower, and anxiety might be reduced while talking under these novel conditions. I probably wouldn't spend more than 30-45 minutes talking in this way because that is not the focus of treatment. Once the clients gets the idea of the changes that are occurring, then I would move right into words or phrases that simulate the same speaking style just to show that talking can be a little more natural sounding than all the repeating, the halting, and the tension that occurs normally occurs when the client stutters.
