Hi Beth! Yes, here in Dallas we have a multi-tiered approach to the interaction between student SLPs and people who stutter - and especially among people who stutter themselves. We have our monthly NSA support group meetings like anyone else in the NSA. We also support a Toastmaster club which meets twice a month for more structured learning on how to improve our communication abilities with no emphasis on fluency per se. Then we developed our monthly Chat and Chew group which we like to call our "graduate NSA program" which pretty much mirrors the real world in 90% of social situations. Then Jan developed her student interview program which ties the student SLP classes - and students themselves - to our NSA chapter. .... Location wise, the monthly NSA meetings, the Toastmaster meetings, and the student NSA classes are all held the UT/D Callier Center for Communication Disorders campus - actually two campuses. The Chat and Chew "hangout meetings" are held at Pastastio's Pizza in Addison, which is as close to NYC's Central Park at we have here. It's really a cool place! The interviews happen all over the city, from restaurants everywhere to hospitals, to Starbuck's coffee houses, to libraries, to shopping malls, to the Callier Center itself. Absolutely wherever works. ..... Everything that goes on here in Dallas has really be thought out pretty well and works because it's FUN! If it ain't fun, it ain't gonna work! <smile> Pretty simple. Both Jan and I - and the rest of the NSA leaders who work very closely together - are very proud of what we've been able to develop here. ..... My favorite activity? Ha, ha, ha! Do I like chocolate or vanilla or strawberry ice cream best? I'm not gonna make that choice - I love 'em all! Actually I love any form of activity that involves the social interaction among people. That's the intellectual way of asking you if you wanna go grab a pizza and a beer with me! <laughing> We learn and grow together when we talk and have fun TOGETHER. I absolutely believe that! .... I wish you the best in your school and your career, Beth. Enjoy the conference! And I hope to see you in Scottsdale next summer! .... Russ
