Hi Leah, I'm glad you liked the title. <smile> I figured that an stuffy academic title would fundamentally say "Go away!" and that's absolutely diametrically opposed to what this article is all about! It's about FUN and how we can use FUN to help each other. Yea! Thanks for that great comment! ..... To really learn something effectively it takes BOTH academic "book learning" and real world experience. My son learned this IN SPADES when he went into the Marine Corps to eventually become a jet fighter pilot. Without the fundamentals of physics and engineering - learned from HOURS UPON HOURS of pounding the books - he could not have begun to fly the jets he now does. (See my home page for some good jet fighter pictures!) .... Now on your question about not wishing to take part... yes, unfortunately. No program is totally universal I know. Jan and I talked about a few reluctant stutterers. One instance related to youthful experiences. At UT/D only about the top 10% of the applicants are selected for admission to the SLP program. The competition is unbelievable. And the winners are some of the most amazing young people I've ever seen. They are the cream of the crop - class presidents, valedictorians, prom queens, top flight cheerleaders, overachievers like you wouldn't believe! And one guy said, "Why should I talk to girls like that who wouldn't give me the time of day back in school? No way." Jeeezz, I think that is soooo sad to think that way. But it does happen. What can I say except it's a loss for everyone. Oh well... And some students are REALLY shy but brilliant, and simply don't enjoy that kind of social interactions. That happens. I'll pass this along to Jan for possibly more details on this. My grandmother used to say "It takes all kinds of people to make a world." Ain't it the truth? .... I wish you the best in school and in your career, Leah. I hope our paths cross some day! .... Russ
