Hi Rick, I think stuttering may be conceptualized as one or more of 3 types. Covert stuttering needs a different approach than overt stuttering and if either are associated with social anxiety disorder then another approach again is needed. So in summary there are differences in description of overt stuttering, (repetitions, prolongations, blocks) and differences in description of covert stuttering (filler words, pauses, substitutions, circumlocutions) and differences in manifestation of stuttering associated Social Anxiety Disorder, but these 3 types of stuttering disorder are fundamental.
