Nicole, I am not a counselor but I know from my work as a health care professional that skill and experience are not the only factors involved. The dynamics of the client/therapist relationship is also important. However I would suggest that using a scale like LSAS would allow the SLP to diagnose the severity of the social anxiety disorder and from that work out whether referral within a multidiciplinary team is necessary. The LSAS would also be an excellent way to measure the effectiveness of any counseling therapy. Thanks for your question.
