I was taught in fluency class to use a positive approach to fluency intervention and to focus on what the child could do (rather than what they could not do) and build from their strengths and needs. As mentioned by my professor Dr. David Shapiro, change should be treated as realistic, desirable, and possible at any age across the life span within communication systems. Telling a child “there are many people who have not recovered from stuttering” focuses on the negative and errs in the direction of pessimism. This pessimistic approach may led to a lack of motivation for the client or child. What are your thoughts?
