I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post regarding supporting individuals who stutter. I am a Speech Language Pathology Graduate student and am currently working with a fluency client. I find stuttering a very, very interesting topic. There were a few things about your post that made a great impression on me. First, you point out how some children who stutter often go unnoticed. I think that teachers should be better informed about how to recognize children who stutter. I plan to work in a school setting and certainly hope this will not be the case at my school! Second, I was angered by the actions of the teacher in your personal story. It was upsetting that you received the message from a teacher “Do not stutter”. I can see how this would be detrimental to a child’s self-esteem and how it could cause some children to stop speaking. Teachers should be a positive influence in children’s’ lives and not the cause of negative feelings. I also enjoyed how you present the material. You present it in such a way that I would consider sharing your information with parents of children who stutter with future fluency clients. Thank you for your information and suggestions on this topic!
