It was interesting how this article began by discussing the fears and avoidance behaviors of PWS in grade school. It was very clever to compare stuttering to a spell that takes over the mind and body of a person. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was very fond of this article. I would have never made all the comparisons between the movie and stuttering, if not for this article. The first piece of advice the authors give to the reader is to relax and stop fighting the stuttering. Next, the article suggests using speech techniques and shining a light on stuttering. Finally, the article uses the invisibility cloak to describe how PWS often hide away from speech due to fear and anxiety. After reading the article, I did recall how Professor Quirrell stuttered when he was trying to portray himself as an innocent, weak, and scared person. This is definitely a negative connotation to stuttering. In closing the article, the authors discuss ways that people have adapted to fight stuttering that are actually more harmful than helpful. This is a great article for children who stutter. They would be able to relate to the subject material, and would definitely learn something knew. This article gives positive advice for children, and is very child-friendly by using Harry Potter associations.
