I have had a few children with fluency disorders and I think the hardest part was relating it to something they could understand and relate to. First, I would like to say that I love this analogy and will use it in the future! I think it is great when clinicians (and future clinicians) can learn things from people who stutter about stuttering. I think people who stutter can be the best teachers for learning about stuttering!! I do pose a few questions regarding the article. 1. Did Katie come up with this analogy all by herself or was it facilitated? (i.e. In therapy, was she being asked how she thought about her stuttering?) I think it would be a great exercise to have CWS come up with unique ideas about what they think stuttering is and how it affects them. 2. Since children are very "hand on", do you think it would be appropriate to role play with this idea of stuttering being a spell? If the child was young enough, maybe pretend to be a wizard or a witch, or even Harry Potter?! I think it would be a fun activity to help desensitize the child, allow him or her to "personalize" the stuttering, and also figure out what helps and/or does not help his/her stuttering.
