I thoroughly enjoyed this paper and the great points that were made! The connection between the “physical struggle” and “mental wrestling” is an important concept for all (especially clinicians like myself) to understand. Stuttering in not just a physical act, but seems to be an emotional roller coaster as well. I found your analogy to Harry Potter to be intriguing, especially the link about “Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.” We are taught that one of the most important steps in stuttering therapy is to help a client establish a sense of control over his/her speech or “stop fighting it.” Fear is typically a lack of control or understanding of the unknown. Using analogies is smart and a lesson to us (clinicians) to find something that our client is passionate about and use it to formulate a meaningful association. Katie - I feel this was an excellent insight into your own stuttering and you have helped me understand the challenges a person who stutters may face. What do you feel has helped you confront your stuttering the most (What are the components of “Relaxus Talkus”)? Thank you!
