Hi Dave, I’m answering your questions several days late as I have been off in California for several days presenting workshop with a colleague. I always enjoy your insightful and soulful commentary. I’m amazed that, given it was in June, 1942, they didn’t take you into the service. Sounds like you were fortunate to be seen by an understanding officer. I’ve met and read about many people who have been inducted who also stuttered, several officers in fact. I assume that they were able to hide their stuttering to the extent that it didn’t create too many problems. At the workshop I mentioned above, my colleague told the story about a friend of his who stuttered and served in Viet Nam. He was coming back from a patrol one night and was unable to give the password as he blocked on the word. He was shot twice but survived. He received a purple heart and was discharged. It would be interesting to see if that fellow regarded stuttering as a gift. Thanks for the German translation of the word Gift. . . very interesting.
