Hi, I am a graduate student at New York University and I am currently enrolled in a fluency disorders course. As someone who is just beginning to learn about stuttering more in depth, I find your break-down on fluency and what it means to be fluent or disfluent very helpful. In your article, you say that learning to be fluent can be viewed as a skill. However, not all individuals who stutter become fluent. If a person who stutters is unable to achieve fluent speech, do you think there is a high probability for him or her to think they have failed? In turn, to what extent do you think this could affect the individual’s self worth?
