Jessie - thanks for commenting and asking a good question. I have talked with a few people who have been covert and are now trying to be more open. Yes, I think owning and accepting the stutter helps people to be more comfortable, and thus stutter more comfortably. I am not sure these folks would say they stutter less, but just more comfortably, and I think that is the goal. I have heard from others that breaking the covert habit is very hard to do, if its what you have known for your whole life, it will take some time to change that. And I will be the first to admit that I still have moments when I get caught or stuck, and react with embarassment. But thankfully those moments are less and less, and I am not beating myself up so much when I get embarassed. Its just being human.
