Hi Pam, I have read your beautiful story, and all of the comments and questions that followed, and most of my thoughts have been covered. The manager who fired you is an individual who should be directed to this website! Would it be possible for you (or someone)to alert him to this (ISAD) wonderful educational experience? He needs to be aware of the incredible resource(you)he dismissed! It is most admirable that you took a humiliating and devastating experience and used it to build your own character, instead of tearing down someone else's. I have been a practicing SLP for years, and I am always saddened when I hear that speech services received in schools were of little help. I know that the relationships with the SLP can build confidence, but to have endured so much of your life hiding your stuttering feels like a failure on my part. Pam, what can I do with a school age child that will prevent them from going through the years of struggle that you went through? Do you think a support group for you when you were in grammar school or high school would have been a better route than therapy? Thanks for sharing, and this is one paper I will have all of my clients read.
