Kelly, good questions. Yes, I believe that if my family had been open and supportive, I would have been more comfortable. I also think if I hasd known someone else who stutters, that would have been huge. I always felt alone, since I never met another person who stuttered until adulthood. An SLP could have helped me as a child just like the student clinicians have helped me as an adult - help me focus on acceptance and realize that stuttering does not define me. I used tothink that as a kid, since that's how I felt I was being identified. I know these days SLPs are more aware of stuttering and work with people of all ages to help normalize the experience. Thats how an SLP can help best, and follow the lead of the client. If a client wants to work on fluency shaping, then by all means, focus on that. But if the client, like me, wants to work on acceptance and feelings, than that should be the focus, I think. --Pam
