I am a first year grad student in the SLP program at NYU. I really enjoyed your article, as the SpeechEasy is not something that I am very familiar with, aside from its reputation as "a miracle cure." How do you explain the immediate reduction of stuttering upon implementing the device, but no significant observable progress thereafter? I certainly see the benefits of anxiety reduction and confidence boosting that present themselves even when there is no improvement in fluency. Are there any potentially irreversible effects if the client believes that the device is enhancing their fluency when it really is not? That is, is it likely to have an effect on later treatment without the device? Thank you for your time.
