Like my co-author, I am not sufficiently interested in continuing this particular line of research. Altered auditory feedback has been available to augment the treatment of stuttering for several decades; the SpeechEasy is merely a more recent and cosmetically pleasing version. Even if contemporary use of AAF is predicated on assumptions that it emulates the choral reading effect, such emulation is currently imperfect--particularly across challenging conditions as our findings suggest. Clients and clinicians will need to judge for themselves if the costs, benefits, and drawbacks of prolonged AAF use represent a worthwhile addition to stuttering therapy.
