The therapy we used integrated components of stuttering modification and fluency shaping. It was administered once a week by Dr. Peter Ramig, a Board Recognized Specialist in Fluency Disorders. His main goal was to replace the subject’s repetitive recoil behaviors with prolonged sounds while moving forward with speech. Another goal was to lessen the duration of silent blocks by initiating voicing while reducing tension. Some specific techniques used included easy onsets to initiate voicing and transition into the next sound, and desensitization exercises such as voluntary stuttering to lessen the fear of stuttering. Incidentally, the subject reported that easy onsets were the most helpful technique for him, as they allowed him to more easily start a sound and thus give the SpeechEasy a signal to feed back to him.
