Your experience with the Edinburgh Masker is testament that electronic fluency aids can be quite beneficial for some who stutter. We have heard similar accounts from some clients who purchased the SpeechEasy. During our group study, we had 2 subjects I can think of off hand who reported that they did in fact use the device to expand their comfort zones and engage in speaking situations they otherwise would have avoided (e.g., ordering at restaurants, talking on the phone). Interestingly, one of those subjects showed virtually no reduction in his overt stuttering during the study, but nonetheless had a very positive opinion of the device. Hmm... it seems you’re on to something with your exhortations about challenging fears and self-limiting beliefs.
