Covert stutters sometimes ask for intermediate or gradual steps to come out of their covert “closets.” But I really don’t think there is such a gradual way to come out and say, “I stutter.” As a former covert stutterer, I found it helpful to tell peopole I stutter while also stuttering openly and using voluntary stuttering. I know covert stutterers who attempt to come out of their covert closets by talking about stuttering, but without stuttering openly. I think that tends to confuse people.
