Julia, great question. You wrote, “I imagine asking them to go around "breaking the news" isn't the most reasonable advice.” Actually, I think that is exactly what is needed. Covert stutters sometimes ask for intermediate or gradual steps to come out of their covert “closets.” But I really don’t think there is such a gradual way to come out and say, “I stutter.” As a former covert stutterer, I found it helpful to tell peopole I stutter while also stuttering openly and using voluntary stuttering. I know covert stutterers who attempt to come out of their covert closets by talking about stuttering, but without stuttering openly. I think that tends to confuse people.
