James, In my experience treating people who stutter, my clients convey that covert stuttering is quite distressing. They find it difficult to continually try to ‘change the word’ when they expect to stutter on it. They say that this changes their affect at times and the message they want to express. They have also said that it is similar to constantly ‘being on guard’. My patients who have been covert in their stuttering have been somewhat relieved when they can stutter openly. Evelyn
