Beth, thanks for writing. Yes I would work on all sounds. Feared sounds and difficult sounds change over time. Also, sometimes it is hard to tell what sound the child is stuttering on. For example, a person who stutters says, “I am p-p-p-pretty hungry.” We may assume that the person stuttered on the “p” in pretty, but the speaker may say that he was actually stuttering on the “h” in hungry. This would be an example of the child repeating the “p” sound by postponing an anticipated stutter on the “h” in hungry. I would start at a level that I thought was “easy” and then move harder, back to easy, harder and so on. If the child is actually stuttering during the activity I encourage the child to stay in the moment and complete the task. This is obviously easier said than done, but every stutter is an opportunity to work on stuttering. Thanks for mentioning Brooklyn, I love it too. I work in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
