Jackie, thanks for writing. When pulling out of a stutter, I like to have my clients think about moving forward. I like to work with clients to figure out where they are and where they need to be. In therapy I usually bring with me a little portable video camera called The Flip (It cost me about $145.00 on Amazon). The video camera is the size of a chocolate bar. My client and I can record each other talking and stuttering and then immediately play it back. Using the Flip, I recently had a student realize that she was trying to pull-out of a vowel sound, but her lips were closed as if to make a plosive. She realized that she had to open her mouth to make the vowel. Moving forward meant opening the mouth to move onto the next sound. Of course, we can do this without a video camera. I could ask my client to direct me how to pull-out of a modeled stutter. I could stutter in a way that is similar to my client and then my client can walk me through the appropriate forward moving steps. Let me know if you were looking for something different or had any follow up question.
