To the client, "hiding" seems like the only or perhaps "best" alternative. Usually they are just not wanting to deal with it. In the same vein, loss of eye contact tells us the same story. I sometimes express my puzzlement and explain that many of my other clients have expressed very different feelings to me... and I'm interested why you (the client) perceives life differently? I think this let's clients know that I "see through" them, hopefully in a subtle way. This is a very enjoyable part of working with stuttering that I haven't found in other Sp-Lang disorders.
