This article was interesting to me because of what I have learned recently as a first year graduate student in speech pathology. I have always been told that it is better for the child to only speak one language. I think about Starkweather’s demands and capacities model and it only makes sense to me that the demands of keeping up with using both languages day to day would exceed the capacities of the child. I am intrigued to learn more about this topic because I have a 7 year old client who speaks Vietnamese at home but English at school. I wondered if asking the parents to speak English at home would be helpful but after reading this I’m not so sure.
