Danielle, Thanks for posting a good question. Thinking back over the clients with whom I've done this, I would say that most find the experience supportive in a positive way. Some of the kids say that they like not being the only one to have to change their speech. One told me that it helped keep his parents off of his back, that they stopped bugging him to try to be fluent so much. One said that he didn't want to do this, because it was weird having his parents helping him in that way. So, we modified his therapy and focused most of the parent involvement on the client teaching his parents about stuttering. It is really important to get the child's permission to do this before starting, and that they be in on the plan of how to involve the parents. If the child wants to do it, and helps plan for including the parents, and then is included with the parents for part of some of his/her sessions, the outcome is more likely to be positive.
