Sarah, Thanks for asking this important question. Since I do not work in a school setting, I may not have much to share with you on this one. I am at a university clinic, and so parents typically bring their child to therapy and are present. That is a big plus for us in engaging parents. I have school SLP friends who tell me that they arrange to meet with some parents before school begins, and use phone conferences and email to keep the lines of communication open. Keeping a speech notebook for a child and sending this home may also be an avenue of communication. You can send home notes and activities and the parents can write notes back to you via the notebook. I think that to really engage parents, there needs to be more contact than during conference times, which are typically once each semester in many schools. If you have any ideas about how school SLPs can keep good communication with parents, I would love to hear about them. Regards, Lynne
