As a graduate student, I have recently learned about Melodic Intonation Therapy, (MIT), and its benefits for patients with aphasia. I had not thought of how people who stutter may benefit from similar techniques. Your paper describing Music Therapy is encouraging. Could it be that by engaging the brain’s right hemisphere for the melodic aspect of speech, the client (? subconsciously) focuses on rhythm…ultimately decreasing his anticipation of the ‘difficulty’ of the next word or phrase? When we think of how difficult it is to ‘speak’ the ABC’s, or recite any nursery rhyme without its rhythm, it would make sense that a musical overlay on speech could impact fluency. Thank-you for your thought-provoking paper Erika. B.Nezlick, student
