Hi Erica, my name is Adriana Catalano and I am a Grad student at NYU and I am currently taking a Fluency Disorders course with Prof. Caggiano. I found your article on music therapy to be very interesting. In the article, you stated that the therapy for a client who stutters involves "improvising lyrics with musical support" and that when the person is experiencing a moment of dysfluency they will feel better knowing that they are fluent while singing. Does this mean that if a client who stutters is experiencing a stuttering moment outside of the therapy room, they should "sing-it-out" to get out of the dysfluent moment? In other words, how does music therapy teach the client to overcome moments when they are stuck during everyday conversation? What techniques would the client use? Thanks!
