Hi, this has been discussed in quite a bit of depth in other threads. I usually leave it up to the individual to self-identify, because our work is more effective if I'm working from a place of respecting the client's beliefs and values. I believe there's quite a mind-body connection, so it's not always exclusive. Working on one is going to influence the other. If I do see some really unusual motoric stuff going on that's beyond my area, I'll encourage the person to see a SLP. Sometimes folks will take me up on this suggestion and have had success with it, and other times they're seeing me in the first place because they have PTSD or other anxiety issues, and they'd prefer not to be in a vulnerable position with a provider who doesn't have specific training in treating such issues.
