Hi, great questions. I discussed the specific neurology of this in one of the threads toward the top. Fun stuff! In terms of instruments, sure, we sometimes use melodic instruments as a component of music therapy, but music therapy involves about 90% singing along with accompaniment, so this would be piano or guitar. You can't really accompany yourself singing with violin (and certainly can't do it with a wind instrument!) You're also going to get a lot more neurological input (and therefore more output and more neurological connections created) if you're using big full chords rather than just a melody line.
