I wouldn't say entirely an intuitive process; I'd say that it's a combination of a person's report and my observations (meaning observations of different responses to interventions, not just observations of everyday behavior). I find that my work is much more successful most of the time when I honor what the person feels is the issue at hand, even if I might feel a bit differently. Sure, there are times when I'm pretty certain that there's something there that the person is just not seeing, and when that's the case, I'll refer for cotreat. But most of the time it works best to work from where the person is and honor what they present as the cause of their issues. It's just like if someone told me that they felt their fear of something stemmed from a particular experience. I might feel that most people would have gotten over that, but what use would it have for me to tell them that their fear couldn't have originated from something so minor?
