Happiness is a desire that most, if not all, people would like to have in their lives. It is so appealing to cling to the belief of “fairy tales” and “happily ever after.” However, the human race is not perfect and therefore cannot experience the perfect happiness we so desire to have in our lives. There does seem to be some factors that may contribute to whether we are happy or not. The first factor is wanting more. We are always wanting more or whatever is just out of reach. I, myself, am so guilty of saying, “if only I had _____, my life would be just perfect and I would be happy.” Even if I do attain that wish, soon enough, I find myself thinking the same thing once again. It seems to be a never-ending cycle. The second factor is thinking the future will hold more happiness. There is the thought of “if only I can get to the next stage of life, then I will be happy.” As the years have passed, I have found the best way to deal with the issue of happiness is to live in the present and learn to be content with what we have been given. The third factor is thinking if you can change another person or situation to your way of thinking, then you will be happy. You cannot change others or control all situations. However, you can control your thinking and how your deal with situations. Often times it is our own response that can give the peace and happiness we so desire. It is hard at times, but accepting that you are the one that is in control of your thinking, you can find peace and happiness in your life. We cannot live in total happiness, but overall, I think if we work on accepting others and choosing to be content with ourselves and with what we have, we can at the very least be content. I believe contentment can lead to happiness.
