that every human (bad or good) is striving for happiness, is trying to achieve happiness, yet we are all so consumed with what others think that we overwhelm ourselves with stress, frustration, and worries? Obviously self-help books are selling, otherwise, no one would be publishing them. But, I think the secret to self-help is being true to yourself and not 300 pages of useless advice. I think we do dwell too much on the past and are terrified or anxious of the future and we often forget the present. It's ironic that what we all want is happiness but our own psyche stops us. We stop ourselves and we dont even know it - that's why psychologists are still in business. Unfortunately, it's difficult to make such a turn around the older you get because past experiences dwell over us. Behaviors are difficult to change but not impossible. I guess that's why we all want those self-help books, psychologists and the like. We all want validation, to not feel alone. And even though we are not, we all still feel like we are. These ideas, that you write about, should be taught at a young age, consistently. It seems like they are, but kids (and adults) get mixed messages all the time and it's so difficult to escape that and unfortunately that affects some much more than others.
