What a wonderfully insightful paper. We share the covert experience. You wrote: "it set me to find more about 'covert stuttering'. I learned a lot from Internet but could not shake off the deep-seated sense of shame associated in my mind with my stuttering, however invisible". You have captured the deepest part of covert stuttering: living with and hiding the shame we attach to our speech pattern. I loved as a covert for almost 40 years, until I had a moment of truth, and I decided to come clean and be true to myself. It is quite the journey, isn't it? Thank you so much for sharing. By the way, my sister married a young man from Goa, India, so I have enjoyed the experience of getting to know and respect his culture. The world keeps getting smaller and smaller. --Pam
