Mark, I begin with an ethnographic interview. That allows the PWS to take me into their life and tell me what is important and what is going on. After all, they are the experts on themselves. I would generally follow up with several more questions in any area of concern. If it appears that social anxiety is a significant aspect of their stuttering, I will refer them to the appropriate professional that is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment/counseling of anxiety disorders. I almost always suggest their attendance at local self-help/support group for stuttering as well (and other self-help/support groups for concomitant issues). In best case scenarios, I have had "counselors" attend self-help/support groups with the clients that we share. This makes for a wonderful treatment team! At this point, I do not use a standardized test for SAD. I am obviously aware of concomitant disorders and I look for any signs of them during my evaluations. Do you have any suggestions on tools to use that can accurately screen for SAD that an SLP could use (other than the ones mentioned in the articles I cited in the previous post)? If so, please pass on the information. I will look them up, study them, and if I find them useful, I will add them to my knowledge base. One can never have enough tools in one's toolbox! Thanks again, John T.
