Julianne, I always (OK, almost always) include the family in the assessment. I work from a philosophy that reminds me that I can never know as much about the individual as they know about themselves. I try to learn as much about them as I can and use various tools to do so. I think that knowing as much as possible about the stuttering research, in combination with competent interpersonal skills will get you much of the information that you need. Reading in the areas of counseling, self-improvement, and other related areas can really help you have a positive impact on the clients you see. If I can suggest one of these books, I highly recommend The Anatomy of Hope by Jerome Groopman. It has nothing to do with stuttering, but alot to do with helping people get better. Thanks again, John Tetnowski
