Dana- With children who stutter so much of what we do is dependant on how old the child is, how aware they are, how negatively they react to their stuttering and what terms we use in therapy. In the previous post to Dave Williams I was talking about simply praising communication, indepependant of fluency, such as, "That was a great story", "I am so glad you told me that", or "You are good at talking". This I would suggest with all young children. In terms of praising stuttering, I think that is most appropriate for a child who is very aware and is in a therapy program where he is learning better stuttering, such as bouncing (easy purposeful stuttering). In those cases I think it is very important to reinforce easier stuttering patterns so the child feels good about not pushing. Stuttering that the child does not repsond too will be easier.
