hi Meghan...great question! One of the things I try to teach my graduate students is the importance of establishing a relationship with the childs parents which is based on trust. this trust comes when you establish your credibilty with those parents. Take time with them, answer their questions, teach them about stuttering, give them resources and make sure they are ont he same page as you are. When you have such a relationship, you are better able to help the parents understand and trust your therapy. I am always careful to provide them with as much rationale as possible...which in this case is when children are more tolerant of stuttering they respond to it less, keeping the stutteirng less complex. also it is easier for the child to use his newly acquired speech tools when he is repsondly less negatively to the stutteirng moment.
