Hi Katy! I am glad you you enjoyed the article. In repsonse to your question, I think, in our profession, we are seeing over the years an increased awareness of the needs to more directly treat stuttering in the young child. As we have become more comfortable in this more direct treatment, which now includes a model of combined treatment including both fleuncy shaping and modification principles, it has opened the dorr for us look differently at the young child. I think there is a question of "comfort level" in talking with the young child about stuttering and sometimes talking in general, certainly a residual effect of Johnson's early theories. As we work more and more directly with young kids, I think we see more and more the need to effectively work on developing positive attitudes and emotions about talking. As we look at evidence based practice, especially in the arena of stuttering specialists who work exclusively with stuttering, more and more slp's will embrace this aspect of therapy.
