I thought your discussion was very interesting. Before entering my first year as a graduate student in NYU’s Speech-language Pathology program, I was a behavioral therapist for children with autism. Often times, I would use these similar techniques in getting them excited to “work.” As a future speech pathologists (interested in fluency disorders) I found your tips to be very helpful and approachable. Currently, I am enrolled in a fluency disorders course with Lee Caggiano. Class discussions often revolve around accepting stuttering and not viewing it as a “problem.” How do you know when to transition from these techniques to techniques for older children (how do you know when they have reached that point)? If they have reached that point of transition, what sort of techniques do you use then in accepting their stuttering and not viewing it as a problem? Thanks for the wonderful insight!!!
