Patricia- Think in terms of the childs specific interests and maturity level...and find a way to make them feel special, successful, and good at talking. you will be surprized how easy it is when you think more in terms of empowerment and being good at communicating, not narrowing the focus on fluency alone. I like to talk to kids this age about being good speech managers (Chmela)and being good at fixing (when they make good changes in their speech). Sometimes I talk to them about beating my stretch (easy speech). We can achieve good things by reinforcing easier stuttering or better stuttering patterns, such as reducing avoidance or speaking with less tension. Part of the power of this is our abiltiy and comfort level to talk openly about stuttering and model acceptance and tolerance of speech mistakes, while sometimes helping them find a "different way to say it."
