Dear Dr. Williams, I found your paper interesting and thought provoking for PWS, SLPs and non-stutterers alike. Your comment on people searching for the magic cure for every malady is extremely "on the ball" (case in point: the bariatric surgery currently performed to combat obesity). I am sure that, in my future career as an SLP, I will encounter many potential clients (or parents of clients) who expect to be able to “cure their stuttering” within a matter of sessions. I’m hoping that I can convey to said clients your sound advice, that “Therapy may have no immediate effect, but may have a delayed effect when the stutterer finally begins (months or years later) to act on what he learned during the active therapy period.” Therapy is NOT a cure-all or an instantaneous solution. As a future SLP, it is tempting to think that I can “cure” my clients, but this is not the case. True, perhaps I can help them manage their stuttering. However, it is their efforts and feelings about themselves that will truly make the difference. Thank you for your contribution to the conference!
