Wow, Julianne! I'm glad you liked my article, but you've asked the million dollar question. The shortest answer I can give (and unsatisfactory to you, I'm sure) is that everything the clinician does and says should reinforce the client's favorable impression of him/herself. I don't know of any specific "technique" to accomplish this, but conseling is a basic means of getting the job done. There are any number of good books on the subject (see the catalog of the Stuttering Foundation of America, headed by Jane Fraser). You ask a very important question, and it deserves a much longer answer than I can provide here! I wish you all success in your becoming an SLP.
